Freelance journalism, subediting and proofreading

I can write or edit just about anything. I’m based in Mid Wales and happy to travel to you (within commuting distance) or to work from my own office. My specialist subjects are the arts, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) issues, small business and employee benefits.

I have more than twenty years’ experience of writing and editing for magazines and book publishers. I have worked on everything from Homes & Gardens to Gay Times and from fiction to theory.

Here are a few samples of my journalism:
On being banned from Labour for tweeting about Plaid Cymru: Click on Wales (IWA);
Features and reviews for Wales Arts Review;
Interview with author Sarah Waters in Diva magazine.

Contact me for a chat about how I can help you.

Freelance copywriting

I can take your thoughts or drafts and turn them into lively copy aimed at your specific audience. I can even transform the turgid business prose of your expert colleagues into plain English that your clients and customers will enjoy reading.

Examples of documents I can write or rewrite:

  • press releases
  • copy for websites
  • blog posts
  • mailouts and e-newsletters
  • brochures and catalogues
  • annual reports
  • funding applications for grants from public bodies such as the Arts Council (Wales or England).

My clients range from theatre companies to business consultants. Just drop me a line and we can have a chat about the needs of your organisation.

I build websites for writers and self-employed people. You might like a single webpage (at a low price) to give you an online presence, just so that people can find you. Or you may want several pages and the ability to add news or blog posts yourself. Either way, I can help. And I will make sure that your site is easy to find, easy to browse and edited into the kind of plain English that works well on the web.

The website you’re now reading is an example of a WordPress site with a few pages and some blog posts, built to a template. This is the mid-priced option.

Here are a few sites I’ve built for other individuals:

Mike Parker – a full website using the colours and fonts of Mike’s choice and linking to a separate blog.

Frances Gapper – a simple website that comes up at the top of a Google search for Frances, allowing readers and prospective publishers to find her easily.

Lesley Hughes Accountancy – a single webpage for a Machynlleth accountant, giving her an online presence at a reasonable price.

I am not designing new websites – the technology has moved on and you may be better off setting up your own site via a paid online service such as Squarespace or Wix.

Past experience

I was the regular freelance subeditor for Director (the business monthly from the Institute of Directors) from 2004 to 2007, and for Employee Benefits (for HR professionals) before that.

I worked for DIVA (the UK’s lesbian glossy) for many years – as literary editor, contributing editor and acting editor – and still contribute occasionally.

In 1999 I set up the Diva Books imprint and went on to oversee the whole books operation for the parent company, Millivres Prowler Group, including Gay Men’s Press and Prowler Books.

I run my own press, Tollington Press, publishing new books by women since 2007. I also work freelance for Planet: The Welsh Internationalist where I have edited the books section as well as writing features, reviews and editorials.
